“Sometimes, with your permission, I would like to talk about relatively serious socio-political topics. Of course, all this will be to the detriment of posts about prison life, but I hope that you will forgive me.
I listen to radio “Mayak”, as usual. And as usual, our Supreme Commander-in-Chief is saying something there. The word “regime” appears periodically, even quite often, in his speech. Of course, in relation to the Ukrainian government, and of course, with a negative connotation. I can even approximately reproduce the whole phrase of the Supreme Commander: “We (in Russia) still have a country, they (in Kyiv) have a regime.” Something like that.
I don’t want to upset Vladimir Vladimirovich, but we, in the Russian Federation, and in Rwanda and Burundi, and even in some Liechtenstein, have a regime. I don’t know where our dear leadership came from with such a narrow understanding of the concept of “regime”, exclusively with a negative connotation (at this point I really wanted to insert the word “pejorative”, but still refrained). There is a suspicion that this understanding migrated from the Soviet youth of our leaders, when they often heard about the bloody regimes of Franco and Pinochet.
In fact, the concept of a political regime is quite neutral. It simply means the system of power that has developed in the country. There are various epithets that describe the regime. The regime can be democratic or authoritarian, personalist, military, party, etc. In the Russian Federation, there is now a personalist authoritarian political regime. And in some decaying European country, the regime is most likely democratic.
In short, there are different regimes, not just criminal and (or) bloody ones. But for our current leadership, who live largely according to the stereotypes of the Soviet era and nostalgically recreate around themselves the realities of the Cold War, the regime is something incredibly bad, and we, of course, do not have and cannot have any regime.
