“Trump, during his May trip to the Middle East, met with the transitional President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and thereby reminded everyone of the changes taking place in this country.
Last December, the authoritarian Assad regime fell within a week and representatives of a rather radical paramilitary group came to power. But in order to retain this very power, the winners began to actively demonstrate their moderation and readiness to communicate both with their neighbors in the Middle East and with important geopolitical players - the European Union and the United States. For the new leaders of Syria understand that this is precisely the path to the sustainability of their position. In response to the show of moderation and openness, Trump declared that "Syria should be given a second chance" and lifted sanctions that had afflicted the country for decades. It only took six months.
We should not forget that the armed opposition units, having taken power, immediately released the political prisoners who were languishing in prison near Damascus. This is always a zero step in the transition of power from dictatorship to something softer and with a human face.
In no case do I presume to say that everything will be fine in Syria soon - it almost certainly won’t be, there are too many problems. Moreover, I don’t call the processes going on there democratization - it’s too early to talk about this, and there’s no reason to. But it is interesting to follow this whole story as an example of the transit of power, and noticing some of its moments may also be useful.

«Трамп во время своей майской поездки по Ближнему Востоку провел встречу с переходным президентом Сирии Ахмедом аш-Шараа и тем самым напомнил всем об изменениях, происходящих с этой страной.
В декабре прошлого года за неделю пал авторитарный режим Асада и у власти оказались представители довольно радикальной военизированной группировки. Но чтобы эту самую власть удержать, победители стали активно демонстрировать свою умеренность и готовность к общению как с соседями по Ближнему Востоку, так и с важными геополитическими игроками – Евросоюзом и США. Ибо новые лидеры Сирии понимают, что именно это является путем к устойчивости их положения. В ответ на демонстрацию умеренности и открытости Трамп заявил, что "Сирии надо дать второй шанс", и снял санкции, лежавшие на стране десятилетиями. На это потребовалось всего полгода.
Не стоит забывать и то, что отряды вооруженной оппозиции, взяв власть, сразу же освободили политзаключенных, томившихся в тюрьме под Дамаском. Это всегда нулевой шаг при под переходе власти от диктатуры к чему-то более мягкому и имеющему человеческое лицо.
Ни в коем случае не берусь утверждать, что в Сирии все скоро будет прекрасно – почти точно не будет, слишком много проблем. И тем более не называю идущие там процессы демократизацией – говорить об этом рано, да и нет основании. Но следить за всей этой историей как за примером транзита власти интересно, а подмечать некоторые ее моменты возможно еще и полезно.
