Around the same time, Europe, through Christianization, expanded to include non-Roman territories, namely the lands east of the Rhine and north of the Danube, inhabited by Germanic and Slavic peoples, and by the end of the first millennium became the cultural and geographical community that we know today.

Примерно тогда же Европа путем христианизации расширилась за счет неримских территории, а именно земель к востоку от Рейна и северу от Дуная, заселенных германскими и славянскими народностями, и стала к концу первого тысячелетия той культурно-географической общностью, которую мы знаем и сейчас.
Но до этого момента Средиземноморье было фактически единым и видные церковные деятели могли происходить из Азии или Африки: Николай Чудотворец был из Мир Ликийских в Малой Азии, его противник ересиарх Арий был из Александрии Египетской, а живший веком позже Аврелий Августин окончил свою жизнь, возглавляя оборону родного города Гиппон (в совр. Алжире) от войск германского племени вандалов. Да что там говорить, когда первый епископ Рима Святой Петр, ученик Христа, был, как известно, еврейским рыбаком. Думаю, что в первые века христианства было достаточно пап – выходцев из разных уголков Римского мира. Не зря писал поэт V века Намациан: "То, что миром звалось, Городом стало теперь". Настоящий девиз глобализации под эгидой Рима. И лишь в эпоху средневековья Европа в значительной степени обособилась и замкнулась в себе, а папы римские стали как правило местными уроженцами – в основном выходцами из Италии (или Франции во время пребывания папского престола в Авиньоне).
