“Recently, one news caught my attention in the news flow. This is the news about the recognition of “Freedom House” as an undesirable organization.
Freedom House is a US-based non-governmental organization that is primarily known for its measurements of the level of democracy in different countries. That is, it is an analytical and scientific center that publishes and annually updates rankings of countries, where each country in the world is assigned a certain score. “Freedom House” uses its own methodology to evaluate political rights and civil liberties, and for clarity, the final result of each country is presented on a 100-point scale. The higher the score, the more the political regime in a given country corresponds to the definition of democracy. According to the methodology, countries are divided into three groups: democracies, imperfect/defective democracies and authoritarianisms.
There are several countries whose score is close to 100 points: these are primarily the Scandinavian countries, as well as some small but developed countries in Europe. The United States is far from being in first place in the ranking, and in recent years has even worsened its indicator. There are also countries with extremely low ratings: North Korea, Turkmenistan, and South Sudan somehow managed to get a negative score.
Russia's rating, as you can guess, has been steadily declining in recent years and, as of 2023, is 16 points out of 100! That is, the Russian political regime, according to Freedom House, is an authoritarianism, and a very tough one at that. Actually, this is so. And the regime certainly cannot like the publication of this information.
But another possible reason for Freedom House to be considered an undesirable organization is, in my opinion, the use of data from this organization by political scientists. Freedom House's ratings and methodology are not indisputable, but they certainly have a scientific basis and are in demand by the scientific community. Perhaps precisely so that scientists in Russia would not be tempted to refer to these data, the organization was recognized as undesirable.

"Недавно в новостном потоке привлекла мое внимание одна новость. Это новость о признании “Freedom House” нежелательной организации.
“Freedom House” - это неправительственная организация из США, которая известна в первую очередь своими измерениями уровня демократии в разных странах. То есть это аналитический и научный центр, публикующий и ежегодно обновляющий рейтинг стран, где каждой стране мира присвоен определенный балл. “Freedom House” по своей методике оценивает политические права и гражданские свободы, а для наглядности итоговый результат каждой страны представлен по 100-балльной шкале. Чем выше балл, тем больше политический режим в данной стране соответствует определению демократии. Согласно методологии, страны делятся на три группы: демократии, несовершенные/дефектные демократии и авторитаризмы.
Есть несколько стран, чья оценка приближается к 100 баллам: это в первую очередь скандинавские страны, а также некоторые небольшие, но развитые страны Европы. США расположены в рейтинге далеко не на первом месте, а за последние годы даже ухудшили свой показатель. Есть и страны с крайне низким рейтингом: КНДР, Туркмения, а Южный Судан каким-то образом умудрился получить отрицательный балл.
Рейтинг России, как вы можете догадаться, последние годы неуклонно снижался и по состоянию на 2023 год составляет 16 баллов из 100! То есть российский политический режим по оценкам “Freedom House” относится к авторитаризмам, причем весьма жестким. Собственно, это так и есть. И публикация этой информации режиму нравиться конечно не может.
Но еще одной возможной причиной признания “Freedom House” нежелательной организацией является, на мой взгляд, использование данных этой организации учеными политологами. Рейтинги и методология “Freedom House” не бесспорны, но они безусловно имеют под собой научную основу и востребованы ученым сообществом. Возможно именно для того, чтобы у ученых в России не было соблазна ссылаться на эти данные, организацию признали нежелательной.
