It is not surprising that the Argentines made such a seemingly unconventional choice. They are clearly tired of the Peronist leftism in economics. The losing candidate was the Minister of Economy, and under him, inflation in recent years was about 150%. Rather surprisingly, about 44% still voted for this person.
Will a libertarian paradise and complete anarcho-capitalism now be built in Argentina? Of course not. Radical politicians in democracies become much more moderate when they come to power. This is both the beauty and some of the “boringness” of democracies. But instilling healthy economic views in Argentina, which has suffered for years from incompetent left-wing populists, clearly won't hurt.
