“June 12 marks the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the declaration of sovereignty of the RSFSR, which is now celebrated as Russia Day. The adoption of such a document fit into the logic of the parade of sovereignties of the Union republics that took place in 1990, being part of the struggle of the then political elite of the RSFSR, including B. Yeltsin, with the leadership of the Union, which was bursting at the seams.
Now June 12 is a public holiday. But at the same time, I have more than once observed how on this day many “talking heads”, “political experts” and, of course, “communists” of all stripes declare from television screens about the depravity of the event that happened in 1990 and that all these declarations of sovereignty ultimately led to the collapse of the USSR, which, as is known, was “the largest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.” And then it’s not very clear what to actually celebrate.
The thoughts expressed by these “experts” partly fit into the ideological paradigm promoted by the authorities, but, taken together with the status of June 12 as an official holiday, they demonstrate its eerie eclecticism: one
then we scold and celebrate.
And a few words about sovereignty, then and now. 35 years ago, at the end of Soviet history, the appeal to sovereignty was used by the republican elites (and not only Russian ones) in order to fight the union leadership and to maximize power in their republics. Now the concept of sovereignty, often repeated inappropriately and inappropriately, mainly serves as a kind of justification for the actual abolition of civil rights and freedoms and the consolidation of an authoritarian regime. You can also recall Surkov’s “sovereign democracy”, which, as you know, is not democracy, but let’s not - everything is clear without that.
And yet, happy Russia Day everyone!

«12 июня исполняется 35 лет со дня принятия декларации о суверенитете РСФСР, что и отмечается сейчас как день России. Принятие подобного документа вписывалось в логику происходившего в 1990 году парада суверенитетов союзных республик, являясь частью борьбы тогдашней политической элиты РСФСР, в том числе Б. Ельцина, с руководством трещавшего по швам Союза.
Сейчас 12 июня – государственный праздник. Но при этом я не раз наблюдал, как в этот день многие и “говорящие головы”, “эксперты-политологи” и, конечно же, “коммунисты” всех мастей заявляют с экранов телевизоров о порочности произошедшего в 1990 году события и о том, что все эти декларации суверенитетов привели в итоге к развалу СССР, что, как известно, явилось “крупнейшей геополитической катастрофой XX века”. И тогда не очень понятно, что тут собственно праздновать.
Мысли, выдаваемые этими “экспертами” отчасти вписываются в продвигаемую властью идейную парадигму, но, в совокупности со статусом 12 июня как официального праздника, демонстрируют ее жуткую эклектичность: одно
то и ругаем и отмечаем.
И пару слов о суверенитете, тогда и сейчас. 35 лет назад, на излете советской истории, апелляция к суверенитету использовалась республиканскими элитами (и не только российскими) с целью борьбы с союзным руководством и для максимизации власти в своих республиках. Сейчас понятие суверенитет, часто повторяемое к месту и не к месту, в основном служит неким поводом-оправданием фактической отмены гражданских прав и свобод и консолидации авторитарного режима. Можно еще вспомнить сурковскую “суверенную демократию”, которая, как известно, не демократия, но не будем – и без того все ясно.
И тем не менее, всех с днем России!
