“In the pre-trial detention center they bring me the Kommersant newspaper, where I am invariably pleased with the “Culture” section. After all, how else can I even get a glimpse of, for example, new movies? So in the issue of November 20 I saw the article "
Sacred Election Commission
" about the film "Conclave" about the elections of the Pope. The review was quite complimentary, and later I read that “Conclave” was nominated for several Golden Globes. So I haven’t watched it, but I recommend it, especially since the wonderful Ralph Fiennes plays the leading role. I'll take a look at it myself at the first opportunity.
And the topic of the election of the Pope and the procedure associated with it is in itself very interesting. This procedure has evolved over centuries. There was, for example, an interesting case when residents of one Italian city - either Florence or Pisa (actually the city of Viterbo - editor's note), where the next conclave was taking place, were irritated by its duration. The fact is that the city community had to support church leaders throughout the election of a new pope, which completely suited the clergy, who were delaying the election process. As a result, the townspeople locked up the participants for the conclave, put them on bread and water, and to be sure, they removed the roof from the building where the electors were locked. (Nihil sancti!) All these actions hastened the election of a new pope, and also began the tradition of isolating the conclave participants until the end of the election.
It is interesting that from a formal point of view, any Catholic can be elected Pope. And there was a case in history when a man without rank was elected pope - Martin V. His enthronement dragged on for several days, because he was ordained in turn as a deacon, priest and bishop, and only after that he was able to take the papal throne. This all happened in the 15th century, that is, a long time ago. Since then, a tradition has developed, perhaps already officially enshrined somewhere, that the pope is elected from among the cardinals, that is, those especially close to him.
Such are the sacred-electoral delights.

«В СИЗО мне приносят газету "КоммерсантЪ", где меня неизменно радует раздел "Культура". В конце концов, как ещё я могу хоть мельком прикоснуться к, например, новинкам кино. Вот и в номере от 20 ноября я увидел статью "Сакральная избирательная комиссия" про фильм "Конклав" о выборах папы римского. Рецензия вполне себе комплиментарная, да и позже я прочел, что "Конклав" номинирован на несколько Золотых глобусов. Так что не смотрел, но рекомендую, тем более в главной роли там играет прекрасный Рейф Файнс. Сам посмотрю при первой возможности.
А тема выборов папы римского и связанной с ними процедуры сама по себе очень интересна. Процедура эта складывалась веками. Был, например занимательный случай, когда жители одного итальянского города – то ли Флоренции, то ли Пизы (на самом деле города Витербо – прим. ред.), где проходил очередной конклав, были раздражены его продолжительностью. Дело в том, что городская община должна была содержать церковных деятелей все время выборов нового папы, что полностью устраивало священнослужителей, затягивавших избирательный процесс. В итоге горожане заперли участников для конклава, посадили их на хлеб и воду, а для верности со здания, где были закрыты выборщики сняли крышу. (Nihil sancti!) Все эти действия ускорили избрание нового папы, а также положили начало традиции изолировать участников конклава до конца выборов.
Интересно, что с формальной точки зрения папой римским может быть избран любой для католик. И в истории был случай, когда папой был избран человек без сана – Мартин V. Его интронизация затянулась на несколько дней, ибо его по очереди посвятили в сан диакона, священника и епископа, и лишь после он смог занять папский престол. Было это все в XV веке, то есть давно. С тех пор сложилась традиция, возможно уже официально где-то закрепленная, что папа избирается из числа кардиналов, то есть особо приближенных.
