“In mid-March, almost simultaneously, I heard two news from museum life on the radio: at the Pushkin Museum. Pushkin, the successful exhibition “Marc Chagall. The Joy of Gravity” ended, and the exhibition “The Art of Portrait” began work in the Hermitage. At the same time, it was said about Chagall’s exhibition that only the artist’s early “Russian period” was widely represented at it, its basis was made up of works that were already available to the general public at the main exhibition in the New Tretyakov Gallery, and from foreign collections only the National Art Gallery of Armenia took part in the exhibition. And the one dedicated to the portrait genre is advertised as representing various objects “from the collections of the State Hermitage and private collections in St. Petersburg and Moscow,” that is, these are again exhibits from the main Hermitage collection, situationally supplemented from other sources. This certainly sounds sad. Of course, exhibitions from leading domestic museums will be popular due to the lack of alternatives. But the museum and exhibition business cannot and should not exist in isolation, as has largely happened in recent years.

«В середине марта почти одновременно услышал по радио две новости из музейной жизни: в ГМИИ им. Пушкина завершилась шедшая с успехом выставка “Марк Шагал. Радость земного притяжения”, а в Эрмитаже начала работу выставка “Искусство портрета”. При этом про выставку Шагала было сказано, что широко представлен на ней был лишь ранний “русский период” художника, ее основу составили работы, и так доступные широкой публике на основной экспозиции в Новой Третьяковке, а из зарубежных коллекций в выставке приняла участие лишь Национальная художественная галерея Армении. А посвященную жанру портрета рекламируют как представляющую различные предметы “из собраний Государственного Эрмитажа и частных коллекций Петербурга и Москвы”, то есть это опять же экспонаты из основной эрмитажной коллекции, ситуативно дополненные из других источников. Звучит это конечно же грустно. Разумеется, выставки от ведущих отечественных музеев будут пользоваться популярностью за неимением альтернатив. Но музейно-выставочное дело не может и не должно существовать в изоляции, как это во многом происходит в последние годы.
