“How I finally read Umberto Eco.
I had several encounters with the books of Umberto Eco and, accordingly, several chances to read something from them. When I was lying at home on the sofa in front of the TV, I periodically glanced at the clock standing in the bookcase, behind which there was a whole row of Eco’s books. Thus, they often caught my eye. But I never read them.
In 2014, I was told about Eco’s essay on “eternal fascism,” part of his “Five Essays on Ethics.” I became interested then, briefly glanced at the certificate, but again did not read it.
Finally, a little later, I came across Eco’s book “How to Write a Thesis” on the Internet, which I pirated downloaded to my computer. Where it was on the desktop for a long time, it was an eyesore for me, but I still read it.
And now, for the second year I’ve been sitting in a pre-trial detention center and I suddenly remember that there is such an interesting Italian historian and writer Eco, whom I kept thinking about reading. Well, I wrote an application to the pre-trial detention center library - here I must tell you that the library in the pre-trial detention center where I am sitting is not working very well, and no matter what books you want in the application, they will still bring whatever God puts in your soul - so, I wrote an application for a book by Umberto Eco, and suddenly they brought me his novel “Baudolino”. Such things in prison in themselves are very pleasing - wow, they brought the book you wanted! And I really liked the novel too. I thought it would be something very refined, abstruse and difficult to read, but it turned out that it was easy and interesting to read. It will be especially interesting for those who are partial to history, primarily medieval.
I am incredibly far from literary criticism, but I still took the risk of expressing my thoughts and impressions about the novel “Baudolino”. For anyone interested, here it is

"Как я все же прочел Умберто Эко.
У меня было несколько пересечений с книгами Умберто Эко и, соответственно, несколько шансов что-нибудь из них прочесть. Когда я лежал дома на диване напротив телевизора, то периодически бросал взгляд на стоявшие в книжном шкафу часы, за которыми как раз расположился целый ряд книг Эко. Таким образом, на глаза они мне попадались часто. Но я их так и не прочел.
В 2014 году мне рассказали об эссе Эко про "вечный фашизм", входящее в его "Пять эссе на темы этики". Я тогда заинтересовался, кратко глянул справку, но опять-таки не стал читать.
Наконец, несколько позже в сети мне попалась книга Эко "Как написать дипломную работу", которую я пиратским образом загрузил на свой компьютер. Где она долго находилась на рабочем столе, мозолила мне глаза, но так и была мной прочитана.
И вот, второй год сижу я в СИЗО и вспоминаю вдруг, что есть такой интересный итальянский историк и писатель Эко, которого я все думал почитать. Что ж, написал я заявление в сизошную библиотеку, – тут надо сказать вам, что библиотека в том СИЗО, где я сижу, работает не то чтобы очень хорошо, а книги в заявке указывай какие хочешь, все равно принесут, что Бог на душу положит, – так вот, написал я заявление на книгу Умберто Эко, и мне внезапно приносят его роман "Баудолино". Такие вещи в тюрьме сами по себе очень радуют – ничего себе, принесли желаемую книгу! И роман мне тоже очень понравился. Я думал, это будет что-то очень рафинированное, заумное и тяжелое в чтении, а оказалось, что читается как раз легко и интересно. Особенно интересно будет тем, кто неравнодушен к истории, в первую очередь средневековой.
Я невероятно далек от литературной критики, но все же рискнул изложить свои мысли и впечатления о романе "Баудолино". Кому вдруг интересно – вот ссылка.
