In a news report from the Mayak radio station, which I heard on August 25, the head of Roscosmos, Mr. Borisov, used the expression “unscheduled completion of the lunar mission.” The announcer added that “the interplanetary station ceased to exist upon contact with the lunar surface.” There seemed to be no other euphemisms. But I would not be surprised if it turned out that through “cessation of existence” and “extraordinary termination” the lunar module inflicted a “fire defeat” on some lunar national fascists. And all together it was a “gesture of goodwill.”
A similar situation with the lunar mission was described long ago by V. Pelevin in the novel “Omon Ra”. The novel, of course, is not about the lunar mission, but, it seems to me, about the phobias of (post)Soviet people and their deconstruction, but the launch of the lunar rover is at the very center of the plot. Read it if you haven't read it.
In addition to Pelevin, I remembered the classic definition of Soviet Russia as “Upper Volta with rockets.” This definition is very relevant, especially in connection with the strained attempts of the Russian authorities to strengthen relations with Africa. And in Burkina Faso (formerly the same Upper Volta) the junta is generally ruling, supported by Wagnerian bayonets. There is a connection.
In general, Upper Volta. And there are missiles. And they even know how to fly. But they never learned how to land peacefully and calmly, without explosions.
