“Another round date – 200 years since the Decembrists’ speech, which took place on December 14 (26), 1825. One can see different things in this event: the naivety of Russian socio-political thought of the early 19th century, the “eternal” Russian disorganization and carelessness, the resilience of exiled nobles and their wives. But the main thing, perhaps, is that the Decembrists were obviously guided by the European model, rightly classifying Russia as part of Europe. At the same time, their program with the course of history was one way or another brought to life, which only confirms the correctness of the thesis about the European destiny of Russia. I think we can sometimes remember this, especially when people around us are shouting something about Eurasia or a special path.
Russia is now much more Europe than two hundred years ago.

«Очередная круглая дата – 200 лет выступлению декабристов, произошедшему 14 (26) декабря 1825 года. Можно видеть в этом событии разное: наивность отечественной общественно-политической мысли начала XIX века, “вечную” русскую неорганизованность и безалаберность, стойкость ссыльных дворян и их жен. Но главное, пожалуй, состоит в том, что декабристы очевидным образом ориентировались на европейскую модель, справедливо относя Россию к Европе. При этом их программа с ходом истории так или иначе была воплощена в жизнь, что лишь подтверждает верность тезиса о европейской судьбе России. Думаю, об этом можно иногда вспоминать, особенно когда кругом кричат что-то про Евразию или особый путь.

Россия-то сейчас куда больше Европа, чем две сотни лет назад.
