No, this text is not about the SCO summit that took place in late August - early September and the meeting between Xi and Modi at it. And about our domestic elephant and dragon.

I’m talking about an exhibition in the museum of architecture dedicated to St. George’s Cathedral in Yuryev-Polsky, Vladimir region. This cathedral, built in the 13th century, was covered with a pattern of white stone carvings, and the emblem of the exhibition was a fragment of this carving - an elephant, as imagined by an ancient Russian master. So to speak, our elephant.
In this regard, I remembered one exhibit in the Hermitage hall dedicated to the Golden Horde. This exhibit is a belt set, that is, decorative plaques and buckles that adorned the belt of some Horde member of the 13th century. It was made somewhere in the sphere of Chinese influence, with the exception of one detail - the buckle, which, apparently, was replaced by the work of a Russian master to replace the lost one. And it depicts a dragon, but, of course, not Chinese at all, but rather hinting at the master’s familiarity with the iconography of “George’s Miracle of the Serpent.” The master, of course, tried to fulfill the technical task given to him by the owner of the belt - some Mongol or Khitan, but in the end he still came out with a completely recognizable snake, our dear Gorynych.
So Russia of the 13th century, as it turns out, is quite the homeland of elephants and dragons.

Нет, этот текст не о состоявшемся в конце августа – начале сентября саммите ШОС и встречи Си и Моди на нем. А о наших отечественных слоне и драконе.
Прочел я тут про выставку в музее архитектуры, посвященную Георгиевскому соборе в Юрьеве-Польском Владимирской области. Этот собор, возведенный в XIII веке, был покрыт узором белокаменной резьбы, а эмблемой выставки стал фрагмент этой резьбы – слон, как его представлял древнерусский мастер. Так сказать, наш слон.
В связи с этим мне вспомнился один экспонат в посвященном Золотой Орде зале Эрмитажа. Экспонат этот – поясной набор, то есть декоративные бляшки и пряжки, украшавшие пояс какого-то ордынца XIII века. Сделан он был где-то в сфере китайского влияния, за исключением одной детали – пряжки, которая, судя по всему, была заменена произведением русского мастера взамен утерянной. И на ней как раз изображен дракон, но, разумеется, совершенно не китайский, а скорее намекающий на знакомство мастера с иконографией “Чуда Георгия о змие”. Мастер, конечно, попытался исполнить техзадание, данное ему владельцем пояса – каким-нибудь монголом или киданем, но в итоге все равно вышел вполне узнаваемый змей, наш родной Горыныч.
Так что Русь XIII века, как выясняется, вполне себе родина слонов и драконов.
