“A side effect of the Iran-Israeli conflict was that information appeared in the media about the filming of a series taking place in Iran based on the novel by the Strugatsky brothers “Hard to Be God.” At least I learned about this precisely in connection with reports about the evacuation of the film crew from Iran.
Filmed by F. Bondarchuk, who at one time (2008-2009) filmed “Inhabited Island” by the same authors. And it wasn't a very good adaptation. Not horror-horror, but still. So there are certain concerns for the upcoming series. Especially considering that Bondarchuk generally professes the cargo cult of Pollivur blockbusters. Out of the corner of my eye I saw footage from the filming: indeed, the style resembles something between “Game”
Thrones" and "Dune".
I suspect that filming the Strugatskys for a mass audience is, in principle, difficult. Even such action-filled works as “The Inhabited Island” and “Hard to Be God” cannot be reduced to one beautiful picture - they are still mainly about something else. It is not for nothing that virtually all films based on the work of the Strugatskys (and this is “Stalker” by Tarkovsky, and “Ugly Swans” by Rybakov, and “Hard to Be God” by German) belong to auteur cinema.

«Побочным эффектом ирано-израильского конфликта стало то, что в СМИ появилась информация о проходящих в Иране съемках сериала по роману братьев Стругацких “Трудно быть Богом”. По крайней мере я узнал об этом именно в связи с сообщениями об эвакуации из Ирана съемочной группы.
Снимает Ф. Бондарчук, который экранизировал в свое время (2008- 2009 гг.) “Обитаемый остров” тех же авторов. И это была не очень хорошая экранизация. Не ужас-ужас, но тем не менее. Так что есть определенные опасения и за грядущий сериал. Особенно если учесть, что Бондарчук в целом исповедует карго-культ полливурских блокбастеров. Краем глаза я увидел кадры со съемок: действительно, стилистика напоминает нечто среднее между “Игрой
престолов” и “Дюной”.
Подозреваю, что экранизировать Стругацких для массового зрителя в принципе тяжело. Даже такие наполненные экшеном произведения как “Обитаемый остров” и “Трудно быть Богом” не могут быть сведены к одной красивой картинке – там все же в основном про другое. Недаром фактически все фильмы, снятые по творчеству Стругацких (а это “Сталкер” Тарковского, и “Гадкие лебеди” Рыбакова, и “Трудно быть Богом” Германа), относятся к авторскому кино.
